Dear if you are choosing Economics as your optional subject for mains examination then you are going to choose right subject but before that I would like to inform you that from the year 2013, UPSC board has made it mandatory that there will be only two papers conducted of optional subject in mains exam and all qualified candidates will be allowed to select only one optional subject from the list so there is only one option for you that is Economics but there are some other subjects also available in the list and you may choose any one from them
Agriculture
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
Anthropology
Botany
Chemistry
Civil Engineering
Commerce and Accountancy
Economics
Electrical Engineering
Geography
Geology
History
Law
Management
Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Medical Science

So there is many options for you and you may choose anyone but if you are strict to select Economics as your optional subject then you must choose it because you are looking interested in this subject and if you have completed your bachelor's degree or master's degree with economics as a mandatory subject then you have collected good knowledge of that subject and you may really do well in optional subject paper but you need to use some good books to prepare for Economics subjects and I have listed some books that may help you in your preparation :
Kalyanjit Ray Choudhry - Economics for IAS Mains
Dutt and Sundaram - Indian Economy
Mishra and Puri - Indian Economy

Economic Times
Domonick Salvatore and ML Ghingan - International Economics
