Inorder to become an IPS officer you have to appear for an All India Competitive Exam called "Civil Services Aptitude Test Exam[CSAT] conducted by the Union Service Public Commision[UPSC] at the central level every year.
This exam comprises of 3 levels:-
1] Preliminary Exam -Usually 3 rd sunday of may every year
2] Mains Exam - Usually month of october-november every year
3] Interview - March onwads every year.

Interview Process : If you qualify both prelims and mains exam then you will have to face interview process under the UPSC board and interview process contains 300 marks and if you qualify this last stage then you would become an IPS officer but there is one more test for IPS final selection which is following as :
Physical and Medical Standards : A candidate should have following physical and medical standards :
1. Hight - Male - 165 cm for general, OBC and SC and 160 for ST category candidate
2. Hight Female - 150 cm for general, OBC and SC and 145 for ST category candidate
3. Chest - Male - 84 cm minimum with the expansion of 5 cm
4. Chest - Female - 79 cm minimum with the 5 cm expansion
5. Eye Sight - For good eye the distant vision should be - 6/6 or 6/9 and for worst eye it should be - 6/12 or 6/9 and J1 near vision for good eye and J2 near vision for worst eye, no inherent night blindness and your vision should be stereoscopic
6. Ear - Good Listening and normal year cavity, and frequency should be between 1000-4000 and hearing impairment should not be more than 30 decibels
7. Nasal - Male/Female candidate should not stammer while speaking/talking/conversing etc.
8. Female/Ladies candidates should not be pregnant while the physical or medical test
