Re: How many marks should I score in Engineering Services exam to get a top rank?

    Hello,
IES stands for Indian Engineering Services. IES exam is conducted by UPSC every year for the recruitment of candidates in different services such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and electronics engineering.

There is no fixed cut off marks in the Exams conducted by UPSC since UPSC follows merit system. The merit list starts from candidates with highest marks and continues till vacancies are filled. So nobody can determine how much marks will be enough for further selection. All you can is prepare your best.

The eligibility criteria for IES exam are as follows:
The candidate should have degree in engineering from university recognized by UGC.
The age limit for general category is 21-30 yrs.
    The candidate should be Indian
Maximum number of attempts permitted for General category is 4.

For further details refer the pdf attached below and for Previous Years Question Papers you can refer www.upsc.gov.in
You can fill the online application form from the official website www.upsconline.nic.in

Re: How many marks should I score in Engineering Services exam to get a top rank?

    Hello,

IES exam is conducted mostly in the month of June. The exam spans 3 days. On the first day, there is a paper which consists of 50% GS questions and 50% English questions. On the second day, two objective papers are conducted which are related to technical stream. And, on the last day, two subjective technical papers are there.

If you do not get a minimum marks in first 3 objective papers, your subjective papers won't be evaluated and your chances of selection vanish. All the 5 papers are of 200 marks each.

If you wish to get a top rank in IES exam, you just need to get 50% marks in every paper. That will surely make you stand among top 10 candidates. You may wonder that if only 50% is required, why is it so tough to secure even a rank in IES exam. This is because of marking system. You won't get 100% marks for a correctly answered question. You will get an average of 60% marke for correctly answered question. If your answer is outstanding, then you get 75% marks. This means that to get 50% marks overall, you must attempt atleast 80% correct in every paper. This is true for subjective papers.

For objective papers, if you attempt a question correctly, you will get full marks, so you stand more chances of scoring.

    Thanks,
