Dear Aspirant,
-You will have to choose two subjects for the Mains of the Civil Service Exams, conducted by the UPSC,from the list of the Optional Subjects.
-Being a student of Mechanical Engineering, your first choice must be MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.It features among the list of optional subjects.
Having to study this subject for a period of four years, the syllabus and topics won't be new to you at all.
Avoid selective study, and be thorough with the complete syllabus.Make this subject your strength.
-For the Second Optional Subject,I would recommend you to choose an ARTS SUBJECT.
The subjects INDIAN HISTORY,PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION and GEOGRAPHY features among the list of optional subjects too.You can choose one from within these three.
These subjects have been highly scoring since long. The success rate of these are much more when compared to the other subjects.
Also, the Paper-1 of the Preliminary Exams basically constitutes of these social studies subjects.Hence you will have the advantage to prepare for both together. This would save time as well.
-If you improve upon your writing skills and work really hard, then you'll definitely succeed.
All the Best!!
as u have done engineering then obviously u have very good knowledge in physics and maths.if u are good in maths then it is better to choose that but if u r not that much good in maths then go for physics.
I will suggests you two optional subjects in which you are confident & you loves learning them, you explore them to depth.
so, first I will suggested that if you are good in your technical field as it shows according to your way of asking
take PHYSICS & maths
as both these subjects are somewhat correlated to each other & also you have been studied them from ageis ,so while preparing them I think you can easily judge weak or strong part and do prepare for the same accordingly.
unlike to taking other non-techanical subjects which are new to you , there is likely chances of being error in the examination if something comes in examination you unable/missed while preparation.
so, choose according to you good luck.

dear friend,
as Mechanical branch is related to physics and Math. and as a Mechanical student you have full knowledge of Physics and Math . so i recommend you to choose Math and Physics.
Good Luck............
hello ..
dear first of all i would like to say that we should always choose those subjects about whom we have better understanding as you are a mechanical engineer so you must be good in physics and mathematics so dear i will suggest you to opt that subject whom you found easy and can prepare well .
if you are good in physics go for it otherwise go for maths.
good luck
Hi Friend!
First, you need to know what is UPSC.
UPSC is Union Public Service Commission which conducts many exams in which Civil Service Exam(CSE) is one of them.
CSE has a misnomer as 'IAS exam' or 'UPSC exam'.
You can choose in whatever you're interested.
Select the one in which you're interested.
I'd suggest someone to go with Public Administration because the content of this subject is very less.
And easy to complete.
You can have all the details abot the CSE at http://www.upsc.gov.in/I WISH YOU ALL SUCCESS!!
