Dear Applicant,
>> The Civil Services MAINS exams are carried out in the months of October and November, depending upon the subjects chosen.
>> Being a Mechanical Engineering Student,You should definitely Give preference to Mechanical Engineering as one of your subjects for the MAINS exams of the CIVIL SERVICES.
>> Having studied this in details for not less than a period of FOUR years, you will have an advantage in hand for sure.
>> As for the second subject, you can choose any subject according to your interest,as it will help you to study better.
>> However, you cannot choose any other branch of Engineering.
>> I will personally recommend you to go for an ARTS SUBJECT as for the second subject.
>> The subjects include Indian History,Public Administration,Political Science and Geography.
>> This subjects are highly scoring.
In the past,it has been proved that these show a Higher Success rate than any other subject.
>> Also, these subjects form the core of PAPER-I of the Preliminary Exams.
Hence, choosing from one of them will be very advantageous,as you can prepare for the MAINS & PRELIMINARY exams, simultaneously.
>> Take your time and make the final call.
>> Be cautious as these subjects carry as much as 1200 marks.

Hi,As far as optional subjects you should choose for IAS mains exam being a mechanical engineering student is concern ,According to me you choose the optional subject from the humanities group. Subject like asPublic administrationHistoryPolitical scienceGeographySociologyThis subject is most popular for the ias exam. And we got the study material from the market and the internet easilyGood Luck...
dear aspirant,
first of all you have to write Civil Services exam for the post of an IAS officer. IAS stands for Indian Administration Services.
Civil Services exam constitutes three parts:
1. CSAT
2. Mains
3. Interview
there is no optional subjects for CSAT. You have to choose two optional subjects only for mains exam.
according to my point of view you must choose Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics as your optional Subjects. because you have studied these subjects in your degree course. So you must have knowledge of these subjects. It will help you in preparation and cracking the exam.
but these two subjects have large syllabus and it is considered tough subjects. If you are not comfortable with these subjects then you can choose arts subjects. From Arts subjects i will recommend you History and Public Administration. As both of subjects have short syllabus and the study material is easily available.
Good Luck.......
dear frnds,
lots of optional subjects in IAS mains but according to me you should choose optional subjects between psychology, political science, Public administration & history being a mechanical engineering student.
Thanks
