Hi,
Reading newspapers will definitely help you to remain aware of what all is happening around you.
Apart from this, your English will also improve gradually.
But there are many books that you can go for in order to enhance your G.K.
Some of them are-
1) The Book of General Ignorance (Hardcover)
by John Mitchinson
2) A Short History of Nearly Everything (Paperback)
by Bill Bryson
3) Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking (Paperback)
by Malcolm Gladwell
4) The Works: Anatomy of a City (Hardcover)
by Kate Ascher
5) The New York Times Guide to Essential Knowledge: A Desk Reference for the Curious Mind (Hardcover)

So buy these books as soon as possible and start reading them.
