There is no optional subject named "Ecology and environment" in the list of optional subjects for mains examination.
however "Environment and ecology" is included in the syllabus of general studies subject for preliminary exam.
however UPSC does not specify any detailed syllabus for environment and ecology.
The following topics are taught in various coaching institutes, so you can take them as a reference
1) climate change and related global talks
2) biodiversity in India and world - list of endangered and vulnerable species in india
3) Policies in india regarding conservation of forests, protection of environment and endangered animals
4) biodiversity summit 2012
5) Global conventions and treaties concerned with environment( like convention on biodiversity, convention on desertification etc)
With this list, you can add topics from current affairs related to Environment and ecology

Kindly have a look at it and decide accordingly.
Go through the syllabus of the subjects which you find it interesting and do your own research on to it.
Because UPSC CSE is all about finding your own self and your own potential.
So best advise would be to your home work on your own.
Because liking of particular subject changes from person to person.
