the optional subject is choice on your capability and interest in the subject. mostly candidate took the own graduation subject which is he already deeply study in the

graduation. one thing is missing on your question, you do not mention the graduation stream.

other wise according to me you pick the humanities subject from the subject list like as:-

Public administration

History

Political science

Geography

Sociology

Economics

Zoology

own mother language.

After clearing the prelim exam you can appear in upsc mains exam. In mains exam There are nine papers. Paper 1 is the language paper of 300 marks in which you can select one languages from 28 languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi etc. Paper 2 is English paper of 300 marks in which English Literature for comprehension question will be asked. Paper 3 is essay paper of 200 marks.

Paper 4 and 5 are General Studies paper in which you have to asked your view in current affairs, this paper is of 300 marks. Paper 5 to 9 are the optional subjects that you choose, there are two papers of each optional subjects, you have to choose only two optional subjects.
