Examination Pattern for Civil Service exam 2013 : There are three steps in the selection procedure which are as :
1. Preliminary Exam : This would be your first test which has 2 papers and these two papers would be conducted in objective type pattern and each paper contains 200 marks and qualifying in this test is necessary to reach to the next step
2. Mains Examination - This would be your second test which has 9 various papers and 5 papers would be common which are necessary to qualify for each and every Civil Service aspirant and you will have to choose any two subjects from the list of the UPSC board for civil services and each subject has 2 papers as - I and II and qualifying in this mains examination is also necessary to reach to the next step and the pattern is following for mains examination of civil services :
Paper I - General English - 300 Marks
Paper II - Any Indian Language from the list of UPSC board - 300 Marks
Paper III - Essay Writing - 200 Marks
Paper IV - General Studies I - 300 Marks
Paper V - General Studies II - 300 Marks
Paper VI and VII - Any Selected Subject - 300 Marks
Paper VIII and IX - Any Selected Optional Subject - 300 Marks
You may choose any two subjects of the following for your mains exam :

for appearing in exam you have to fulfill some other requirement like:
>>you must have completed or appearing in final year of graduation.
>>your age must be within 21 years to 30 years on 1 August of the year of exam. there is relaxation in upper age limit upto 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
and you must have attained the minimum age on same date and you have not attained the upper age on similar date.
