    Well dear it is good to know having a engineering student you want to go for civil services exam.
    As your branch is listed there in the optional subjects so you can select that as your optional only if you feel confident.
    You can go for humanities subjects also like public administration and sociology.

    Examination Pattern for Civil Service exam 2013 : There are three steps in the selection procedure which are as :

    1. Preliminary Exam : This would be your first test which has 2 papers and these two papers would be conducted in objective type pattern and each paper contains 200 marks and qualifying in this test is necessary to reach to the next step

    2. Mains Examination - This would be your second test which has 9 various papers and 5 papers would be common which are necessary to qualify for each and every Civil Service aspirant and you will have to choose any two subjects from the list of the UPSC board for civil services and each subject has 2 papers as - I and II and qualifying in this mains examination is also necessary to reach to the next step and the pattern is following for mains examination of civil services :

    Paper I - General English - 300 Marks
    Paper II - Any Indian Language from the list of UPSC board - 300 Marks
    Paper III - Essay Writing - 200 Marks
    Paper IV - General Studies I - 300 Marks
    Paper V - General Studies II - 300 Marks
    Paper VI and VII - Any Selected Subject - 300 Marks
    Paper VIII and IX - Any Selected Optional Subject - 300 Marks

    You may choose any two subjects of the following for your mains exam :

    1. Agriculture
    2. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
    3. Anthropology
    4. Botany
    5. Chemistry
    6. Civil Engineering
    7. Commerce and Accountancy
    8. Economics
    9. Electrical Engineering
    10. Geography
    11. Geology
    12. History
    13. Law
    14. Management
    15. Mathematics
    16. Mechanical Engineering
    17. Medical Science
    18. Philosophy
    19. Physics
    20. Political Science and International Relations
    21. Psychology
    22. Public Administration
    23. Sociology
    25. Statistics
    26. Zoology

    You are a Engineering Student so that you may choose any one of the following combination for your mains examination :

    1. Civil Engineering and Public Administration
    2. Civil Engineering and Political Science
    3. Civil Engineering and Any one Engineering Subject
    4. Civil Engineering and Mathematics

    Interview Process : This would be your final step to get the post of IAS officer under the central government of India and you need to qualify above two steps to reach to this step and Interview Process has 300 Marks

    Dates for upcoming Civil Service Exams : 2013

    Start date for online application - 02-02-2013

    Last date for online application - 04-03-2013

    Date for UPSC Civil Service Preliminary Exam - 19-05-2013

    dear aspirant,

    you can choose Civil Engineering and Mathematics as

    your optional subjects. because you are known to these subjects

    and studied these subjects in your academics carrier. So it is helpful

    for you in preparation and cracking the exam.


    Civil Services Exam is conducted by UPSC for the posts of IAS, IPS, IRS etc. posts.

    Civil Services exam constitutes three parts:
    1. CSAT
    2. Mains
    3. Interview



    for appearing in exam you have to fulfill some other requirement like:

    >>you must have completed or appearing in final year of graduation.



    >>your age must be within 21 years to 30 years on 1 August of the year of exam. there is relaxation in upper age limit upto 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
    and you must have attained the minimum age on same date and you have not attained the upper age on similar date.
