If you want to appear in IES exam i.e. Engineering services examination then you have to select the subjects as the engineering subjects. But if you want to appear in ias and ips examination you to take Arts Subjects like History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy etc. If you have good writing skills then you can absolutely Crack the Exam.

There are two types of written examination in UPSC.

UPSC Prelim exam and UPSC Mains exam. You will appear in UPSC Prelim exam first in which Objective type Questions are asked from General English, General Studies etc.

For UPSC Mains you have to choose Subjects. There are total 51 Optional Subjects in which 23 are from main subjects and 28 Language Subjects like Hindi, English, Bengali etc.

The Preliminary Examination will consist of two papers of Objective type (multiple choice questions) and carry a maximum of 400 marks

The Main Examination will consist of a written examination and an Interview Test. The written examination will consist of 9 papers of conventional essay type.

Syllabus for prelim exam: Current events of national and international importance

History of India and Indian National Movement

Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World

Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc

Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.

General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization

For mains exam you have to choose the subjects.

    Dear Applicant,
-There is no restriction laid upon by the UPSC upon the candidates while electing the optional subjects. You are free to choose any subject, depending upon area of interest and choice,BUT make sure that the subject features in the list of optional subjects allowed for the Mains exams.
-Hence,being an Engineering student in Information Technology, there is no reason why you cannot opt for History,Geography or Psychology. They do feature in th LIST and are a better choice too.
-Trust me,I too would have personally recommended your for the Arts Subjects to choose from for the Mains exams.
-The subjects such as INDIAN HISTORY,PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION,GEOGRAPHY,POLITICAL SCIENCE AND PSYCHOLOGY are favoured by most of the applicants in this exam.
-They are highly scoring, and hence have a higher success rate when compared to the other subjects.
-They also form the coerce of the Paper-I of the Preliminary Exams. This would help you prepare for both the Preliminary exams and the Mains,at the same time.
ThuS,saving time and giving you and advantage.
    :: SUGGESTIONS ::
    # Improve your writing skills.Get rid of your grammatical and spelling errors.
    # Practice a lot of essay writing. Most questions asked in Mains are subjective in nature.
    # Solve a lot of model papers and previous year question papers.
    # Improve your General Studies and knowledge upon current affairs.
    # Use your time well and maintain a positive attitude.
    # Work hard and prefer self-study.
    AlL ThE BeST !!!
